These images are created by focusing the sun with a magnifying glass to create momentary light sculptures. The cyanotype becomes a record of the moment and capture the three dimensional appearance of the light. I find it interesting that the 'normally' 3-dimensional objects (my hand and the magnifying glass) are transformed into flat 2D sillhouttes. What started as a way of recording this moment became a repetitive process.
As the summer progressed, the exposure and the shape of the cone would change based on the angle and intensity of the sun. I am interested in repetitive acts, how they function as part of the "ordering impulse" - which is the conscious (or subconscious) attempt to impose order on the perceived disorder of a chaotic world. I am working on an essay about this idea which you can read here.
